Nokia Announces C5 phone

While mobile phone manufacturers are seemingly competing against each other, Nokia has decided to bring out its C5 model in an attempt to push the standards and technology to the highest possible altitude. The C5 has all the greatest features for sharing and social networking and the custom optimization that it features is top notch. Not only is this a great social networking smart phone, but it also offers its users the use of Ovi Maps with drive navigation and the inclusive free walk mode. This will allow you to share your location with friends on your social networks so that if you are in the same area you can hook up for a coffee and chat.

Actual Release Later this Year

While Nokia has only stated the C5 as an announcement, the release date is scheduled for some time in the 2nd quarter, allowing more people to gear themselves up for its pending arrival. It is Nokia’s hope that there will be an uproar about this phone much like the iPhone debut, although probably on a smaller scale. While the iPhone release was of great importance to mobile phone users, the Nokia C5 is lagging a bit behind with the latest technology.

First LTE Phones coming From Samsung and MetroPCS

And the first 4G LTE phone in the United States will come from … MetroPCS! MetroPCS and Samsung on Wednesday announced a partnership that includes the first CDMA/LTE phone in America, the SCH-r900, which will come in the second half of 2010.
“MetroPCS will be building a network in the Las Vegas metro area in the second half of this year and they will be partnering with Samsung for a complete solution,” said Tom Jasny, Samsung’s Telecommunications America vice president of wireless and broadband networks.

LTE is the global 4G technology which will replace 3G for Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile in the coming years. Verizon Wireless has started testing LTE in Boston and Seattle, and the company plans to roll out the LTE network to 20 to 30 cities by the end of this year. However, Verizon hasn’t announced any supporting phones.
Sprint, of course, actually made the first 4G phone announcement yesterday with the HTC Evo 4G “super phone.” But the Evo runs on WiMAX, a technology that only Sprint uses of all the major carriers.

MetroPCS, with 6.7 million customers, largely skipped 3G. The company is jumping straight to LTE, which can provide speeds up to 30 megabits/sec down on a 5-MHz channel – ten times the speed of 3G. The new 4G network will allow for “real time video, much faster internet browsing, and higher download speeds for multimedia, music and other information services,” Jasny said.

MetroPCS and Samsung didn’t release any other public information about the phone, including whether or not it’s a smartphone. MetroPCS chief operating officer Tom Keys did confirm that his company is focused on providing phones and handhelds, not USB modems or laptops.

There’s one big question about MetroPCS’ LTE rollout. Unlike Verizon Wireless, MetroPCS is stuck in relatively narrow bands of spectrum in most cities. The company can deploy 1.4-MHz, 5-MHz or 10-MHz LTE channels. If MetroPCS stick to 1.4 MHz, the company will maintain much of their existing 2G voice capacity, but their LTE network will run at basically 3G speeds of 3 megabits/sec or so. But if MetroPCS uses wider channels, the company risks crowding out existing 2G users.

MetroPCS has various ways to approach that problem, executives said. The company could potentially switch over to Qualcomm’s 1X Advanced 2G technology, which can pack more voice calls into less spectrum, thereby leaving room for LTE. Or it could aggressively move their customers onto voice-over-IP, LTE based services, reducing the congestion on the 2G side.

We’ll hear more about MetroPCS’ LTE plans in the coming months.

HTC Evo 4G Android phone will come to Sprint this summer

Sprint has announced that this summer it will be releasing the HTC Evo, a 4G Android phone. It seems like people have given up on an “iPhone killer” but this is quite a powerful phone.

Android 2.1 isn’t the only cool thing this phone comes with. The HTC EVO 4G will arrive with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, DUAL cameras – 8 megapixels for shooting forward and 1.3 megapixels for shooting backward. The forward facing camera will be able to do stills as well as HD video.

In terms of wireless yes, it’s a 4G phone, it’s got Wi-Fi, AND it has the built in ability to act as a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight, read again, EIGHT, devices.

Much to Apple’s dismay it will also come with, gasp, a Flash player and pinch to zoom. The jury is literally still out on whether Apple will let HTC keep the latter.

What’s the deal with 4G? Well, Sprint claims that their 4G at 6 megabytes per second is up to 10 times faster than 3g, if that’s the case it’s blazing fast. Equally as fast as most home services but alas, no 4g in my neighborhood yet.

According to Sprint, “Sprint currently offers 4G service in 27 markets, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Portland, Ore., San Antonio and Seattle. Following is a comprehensive list of markets by state where Sprint 4G is currently offered: Georgia – Atlanta, Milledgeville; Hawaii – Honolulu, Maui; Idaho – Boise; Illinois – Chicago; Maryland – Baltimore; Nevada – Las Vegas; North Carolina – Charlotte, Greensboro, (along with High Point and Winston-Salem), Raleigh (along with Cary, Chapel Hill and Durham); Oregon – Portland, Salem; Pennsylvania – Philadelphia; Texas – Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Killeen/Temple, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, San Antonio, Waco, Wichita Falls; Washington – Bellingham, Seattle. For more information, visit ”

Hopefully you can find some 4G-ness around you so you can really take advantage of the speed, I can’t.

Lastly here are some of the more interesting specs on the phone:
