New LG MAXX on Snapdragon processor

LG Electronics Inc. (KSE:066570), the world’s third-largest mobile handset makers, said Tuesday that it will roll out a mobile feature phone using a Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm Inc. and supporting a wireless fidelity (WiFi) function in its domestic market.

The upcoming MAXX phone is powered by a 1 gigahertz Snapdragon processor, the chipsets that were also used for Nexus One, the first mobile handset released by Google Inc. MAXX is also optimized for Web surfing, enabling the wireless Internet connection through WiFi, the company said in a release.

It is not a smartphone like Apple Inc.’s iPhone, which runs on its mobile operating system, LG said.

The high performance chipset and the WiFi feature sets it apart from other feature phones, a term that refers to traditional mobile handsets that largely support voice-based functions.

Priced at the upper end of 800,000 won (US$694), MAXX will be available through LG Telecom Ltd., the country’s smallest mobile carrier starting Wednesday.
