New details on Motorola Droid Xtreme (ex. Shadow)

Goodbye Shadow, hello Xtreme. New images and details have surfaced of Motorola’s Droid Shadow phone—now branded the Droid Xtreme—which was previously alleged to have been lost in a Verizon gym last week.

According to DroidLife, the new phone is definitely sporting an 8-megapixel camera and an "HD Video" label around the lens indicates that it’ll be able to shoot movies at a resolution of 720p at least.

The phone’s UI will run a partially customized UI based on Android 2.1 – at least according to the current batch of pictures that highlight the Xtreme’s interface. It’s unclear whether Motorola will opt for a last-minute upgrade to Android 2.2, or "Froyo," prior to the device’s rumored July or August release.

So what else is in the Xtreme? As reported by Gizmodo, Motorola’s second Droid phone is going to be a Verizon-exclusive device that features a 4.3-inch screen, 16 gigabytes of internal storage, a speedy Snapdragon processor, and an HDMI port. An alleged picture of the Xtreme’s battery, posted to howardforums, places the 1500-mAh battery right in between the HTC Incredible’s 1300-mAh battery and current aftermarket batteries that can jump up to 1700-mAh. It’s a little bit skinner than the battery for Motorola’s Droid 1 and, should, theoretically, have a longer charge.

Confusion remains, however, over just what exactly Verizon plans to launch in the coming months: Recall that its Droid 2 phone, successor to the Droid 1, is not the same phone as the aforementioned Droid Shadow/Xtreme. Both have passed through Verizon’s inventory system, reports DroidLife, which indicates that both could be hitting the market at similar timeframes. The Droid 2 will sport a keyboard and, according to Gizmodo, a mere 2 gigabytes of internal storage compared to the Xtreme’s 16 gigabytes.

Rather than taking a more traditional route to unveiling a new cell phone, which would be staging a public event or dedicating a press release to the phone’s specifications, the company has alluded to the Ally’s existence in a company statement about an advertising tie-in to Iron Man 2, along with a movie-themed Web site for the device.

Its hard to write about a simple clamshell style phone, but that said, I do realize they have their place in the market. After all not everyone wants an expensive smartphone, or the extra expense in the form of a required data plan. Given that, they should be fair game to cover once in a while, especially when they come sporting a super cool name as in the case of the Pantech breEZe II. And yes, that is the official spelling.
