Samsung is to launch New Galaxy S Android phone in South Korea next week

Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s second-largest maker of mobile handsets, said Thursday that it will launch its Android-based smartphone in South Korea next week.

The new model, Galaxy S, will be sold via South Korea’s top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co., a few days after the launch ceremony slated for June 8, the same day when Apple’s new iPhone 4G is reportedly to be unveiled at the company’s annual conference in the United States.

Galaxy S, powered by Google Inc.’s Android mobile operating system, is equipped with a 1 gigahertz Samsung chip and a 4-inch touch-screen dubbed Super AMOLED, Samsung said. The soon-to-be released smartphone can be updated with improved applications and digital multimedia broadcasting service for local users, it said.

Samsung has pre-sold nearly 1 million units of the new model worldwide. The company expects that orders of the Android phone will continue to soar as mobile carriers around the world view the Galaxy S as a strong alternative to the iconic iPhone, it said.

The company launched the touch-based smartphone in Switzerland on Wednesday, one month after its debut in Singapore. It unveiled the new phone for the first time during the annual CTIA wireless show in Las Vegas in March.
