Panasonic Releases New Lumix Camera Phone for Japan

At this week’s Ceatec electronics show in Tokyo, Panasonic introduced a new phone: the first mobile phone to contain the company’s Lumix digital camera.
The new phone, which has a 3.3-inch touchscreen display, boasts a 13.2-megapixel image sensor behind a 27mm wide-angle lens. There is no optical zoom. A large silver ring like those found on digital cameras appears to guard a lens a couple of centimeters in diameter, but a closer look reveals what appears to be a conventional cell phone lens in its center.

Panasonic (News – Alert) released only a few details about the phone’s specifications nor information about the price, but the truth is, consumers outside Japan are unlikely to ever get their hands on one. The company, Japan’s largest maker of mobile phones, doesn’t sell its more advanced phone models outside of the country.
Panasonic is aiming the phone at users who want something better out of a phone camera: the company said the new should be capable of producing higher quality pictures than its current cell phone models. The phone features a mobile version of Panasonic’s VenusEngine image processing chip that is said to improve color reproduction. A lens coating was added to help reduce glare, and a more powerful flash was built in. Just as with the company’s Lumix line of compact digital cameras, the Lumix Phone (News – Alert) will use the intelligent Auto (iA) name for its auto mode. The company previously said it will offer picture sharing via its picture Jump technology, over WiFi (News – Alert) and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) networks.
The phone will be available in four colors: blue, gold, black and pink. It is expected that Panasonic will offer information about the full specifications of the phone when NTT (News – Alert) DoCoMo announces a new line-up of mobile phones.
