LG’s Dual-Core Phone to Launch in UK in March

With a dual-core 1Ghz Nvidia Tegra processor, the LG Optimus 2X Android-based smartphone is expected to hit UK shores in March of this year. When LG originally announced the release, they touted it as the world’s first dual-core processor phone.

Does dual-core actually mean twice as fast? Not necessarily, but anyone who has used a single-core netbook and then went back to their dual-core computer has undoubtedly noticed that multitasking and CPU-intensive applications (such as video recording) run better with the extra processor boost. This means that the LG Optimus 2X can play 1080p HD video and also record it with its 8 megapixel camera.

The new smartphone will launch with Android 2.2 (Froyo), but LG has promised to soon upgrade it to 2.3 (Gingerbread) some time after the initial release. For all the power, the Optimus 2X also comes with a whopping 1500mAh battery, and is now only missing hyperdrive and time traveling capabilities. But before those of you in the US start salivating over this super-phone, you should know that LG does not have immediate plans for a US release.

The Opitimus 2X will primarily be sold as an unlocked GSM phone in European and Asian markets. Although unlocked phones are not unheard of in the US, most American consumers are accustomed to buying phones from carriers at subsidized prices. The UK release of the Optimus 2X will cost £500. It is scheduled for launch in Korea this month.
