Samsung Gem SCH-i100 released officially

Samsung USA has officially unveiled a new Android handset called Samsung Gem SCH-i100.

We’ve previously seen the device bearing Verizon’s logo, so the carrier will probably launch it sometime soon.

Since we’re in 2011, you’d expect the Gem to run Android 2.2, or 2.3. Well, it doesn’t.

According to Samsung’s website, the smartphone runs Android 2.1 Eclair.

Apart from the 1-year old version of Android, the Gem also comes with a 3.2 WQVGA touchscreen display, Swype virtual keyboard, social networking integration (via Samsung Hub), MicroSD card support, 3.2MP photo camera, and an 800MHz processor.

There’s no word on the price of the Samsung Gem, but, if it will come with Android 2.1, Verizon should make it free on contract – otherwise, I don’t think there will be many customers interested in buying it.
