Motorola Droid 2 will be released in August

The Motorola Droid 2 is one of those highly-touted smartphones. Available on the Verizon network, the Motorola Droid 2 is already poised to become an instant success. Being that the phone has not been released yet, many potential buyers want to know when to expect it on the shelves.

The Motorola Droid 2 has a couple of strong release date possibilities, both of them in August. One of them is August 12 and the other is the 23.

The phone boasts the Android OS, camera, and slide out QWERTY keyboard. The OS is supposedly Android 2.2 FROYO. It’s set to de-throne the Evo 4g as the most advanced Droid based phone on the market.

It’s no secret that he phone will sell out in retail outlets across the country the day of its release. Those who are particularly excited about handset should either pre-order or arrive at the store on the day of the release extremely early to ensure that they aren’t let down with a sold out handset.

The Droid was one of the first Androids out on the market, and it was hugely successful. Many expect the Droid 2 to live up to the same fame and gusto.

Unofficial Android 2.1 for Motorola Cliq sneaks out

The last we heard, Motorola was still testing its Android 2.1 operating system upgrade for the T-Mobile Cliq. Originally scheduled to be released last quarter, Motorola pushed the update back to a rumored August debut. So with July passing quickly, it makes sense then that a leaked version of the ROM has made its way online.

Engadget Mobile loaded the ROM onto itsown Cliq to give it a run through. According to the blog, the phone runs a bit snappier than it did before the update, even with its 528MHz processor. Apps such as Google Maps and the Web browser run “surprisingly smoothly,” which give the phone gets a new lease on life.

The ROM includes Motorola’s updated MotoBlur user interface with an enhanced desktop experience that includes widgets that can be resized. However, it’s not all roses and unicorns as live wallpapers and pinch-to-zoom support are nowhere to be found in the update. It’s very possible that wallpapers were left off due to hardware restrictions.

As Engadget points out, this looks to be an official build, although it does have a few glitches. With a few weeks to go before this likely hits the masses, there’s plenty of time for Motorola to address any technical issues. Look for the company to iron out any sticking points before the final release.

It should be noted that while the ROM is available to the public, it is somewhat buggy and requires you to have root level access to the phone.

New details on Motorola Droid Xtreme (ex. Shadow)

Goodbye Shadow, hello Xtreme. New images and details have surfaced of Motorola’s Droid Shadow phone—now branded the Droid Xtreme—which was previously alleged to have been lost in a Verizon gym last week.

According to DroidLife, the new phone is definitely sporting an 8-megapixel camera and an "HD Video" label around the lens indicates that it’ll be able to shoot movies at a resolution of 720p at least.

The phone’s UI will run a partially customized UI based on Android 2.1 – at least according to the current batch of pictures that highlight the Xtreme’s interface. It’s unclear whether Motorola will opt for a last-minute upgrade to Android 2.2, or "Froyo," prior to the device’s rumored July or August release.

So what else is in the Xtreme? As reported by Gizmodo, Motorola’s second Droid phone is going to be a Verizon-exclusive device that features a 4.3-inch screen, 16 gigabytes of internal storage, a speedy Snapdragon processor, and an HDMI port. An alleged picture of the Xtreme’s battery, posted to howardforums, places the 1500-mAh battery right in between the HTC Incredible’s 1300-mAh battery and current aftermarket batteries that can jump up to 1700-mAh. It’s a little bit skinner than the battery for Motorola’s Droid 1 and, should, theoretically, have a longer charge.

Confusion remains, however, over just what exactly Verizon plans to launch in the coming months: Recall that its Droid 2 phone, successor to the Droid 1, is not the same phone as the aforementioned Droid Shadow/Xtreme. Both have passed through Verizon’s inventory system, reports DroidLife, which indicates that both could be hitting the market at similar timeframes. The Droid 2 will sport a keyboard and, according to Gizmodo, a mere 2 gigabytes of internal storage compared to the Xtreme’s 16 gigabytes.

Motorola Square QWERTY Phone Revealed

A hands-on image of an upcoming Motorola QWERTY phone offering a square slider design has leaked out.

Compact QWERTY phones aren’t exactly news in the mobile world, but a new Motorola QWERTY phone with a square slider design seems to be joining the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro later this year to become the two first Android phones of the kind. According to Boy Genius Report and DroidDog, the new Motorola phone will be powered by Android 2.1 and MotoBlur. Check out the latest version of MotoBlur in action in this video:

There’s no hardware specifications available for the new Motorola QWERTY phone, but like other compact Android phones, including the X10 Mini Pro, it should offer a 2.x-inch QVGA touchscreen. Based on the only hands-on image available of the phone so far, it also looks like it’ll offer a keyboard with buttons designed similarly to the Nokia Twist’s QWERTY keyboard buttons.

Price and availability of the new Motorola QWERTY phone is not yet known, and neither is the phone’s network support.

Motorola Titanium XT800 Heading To South Korea

Reports are out that Motorola is preparing a new entry-level smartphone for the South Korean market. Obviously, that’s a hard mobile market to crack with local giants Samsung and LG competing heavily, but Motorola’s MOTOROI has been doing (allegedly) well and now they’re going to go after the low-end market with another new Android phone.

The new phone, called the Titanium XT800, will be a slate-style phone with a 3.7-inch display (bigger than the iPhone 3GS, mind you). For processor power, the leak says that it will have the same Texas Instruments processor found in the Motorola Droid/Milestone, which is a OMAP processor that has a clockspeed of 600 MHz (they underclocked it on the Droid, may do the same here).

It will have a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash as well as a HDMI output (which all but confirms it’s capable of HD video). It will reportedly be a dual-SIM device and will be running Android 2.0 (but not 2.1?).
This device has been out in China for sometime, and now Motorola is pressing their luck with it in South Korea. The device is allegedly heading to SK Telecom first, but evidence points towards Motorola having both CDMA and UMTS out in the country. The guys at IntoMobile suggest that this will be a media-centric device, and that MOTOBLUR is being left off the device.

No word on pricing or a release date – or if it will work unlocked on a North American/European network. It is nice to see some cheap Android phones coming out, though. Not everybody can afford those HTC Android “Superphones”.
