Bada-powered S8500 Wave from Samsung
February 25th, 2010 by admin in samsung
Samsung launched its new S8500 Wave phone during Mobile World Congress. The Wave is the first phone to run on Samsung’s new “bada” operating system, so we met up with Samsung to get a look for ourselves.
The S8500 Wave, which runs Samsung’s custom TouchWiz 3.0 user interface, measures 118mm x 56mm x 10.9mm (4.6in x 2.2in x .42in) and has a 3.3-inch “Super” AMOLED display. The Wave is powered by a 1GHz processor and is the first device to offer both Bluetooth 3.0 and 802.11n WiFi support. aGPS, a 5 megapixel camera, and a choice between 2GB or 8GB of storage top off the features of the Wave.
Thanks to its aluminum body, the Samsung Wave feels quite nice in the hand. The large “Super” AMOLED display is indeed quite super, putting out crazy bright colors that make it hard to notice that the rest of the device is fairly plain looking. The capacitive touchscreen surface on the display is very, very sensitive - one of the best we’ve used.
As to what Samsung’s bada OS is offering that other platforms are not, we’ll just have to wait until we get a proper review device to find out, it seems. On the surface, bada appears to be little more than a further extension of Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface. Though a prettier and seemingly more usable one.
The Samsung S8500 Wave will be available globally in April 2010.
